Torchlight Infinite’s open beta is now available on the Play Store. If you couldn’t jump into the closed beta last month, the game is now open to everyone. Torchlight, if you’re unfamiliar, was originally the work of now-defunct developer Runic Games, which made two games in the series before its closure in 2017 - the sequel delivering a critically acclaimed chunk of captivating dungeon-crawling and class-based hack-and-slash action.
Torchlight: Infinite, which is developed by Shangai-based studio XD Inc., takes the series’ dungeon-crawling formula and reworks it to accommodate a free-to-play model. The game is dubbed as a true loot-based ARPG, which embodies everything fans love about the genre. The hero-driven, action-packed gameplay throws you into dungeons teeming with treasures, and players can do so whilst indulging in deep skill systems, and bountiful builds for an array of characters.
Despite the controversy over Diablo Immortal’s aggressive monetization strategy, it was a huge success, raking in $100 million in just eight weeks. Torchlight Infinite appears to be following a similar process, despite promising that “all gears, affixes, crafting material and upgrades on attributes are all loot-based.” A focus on loot-based gameplay doesn’t mean microtransactions are pushed to the side. Currently, microtransactions are available for a season pass, monthly pass, premium currency bundles, and access to the auction house. It’s too early to tell how intrusive this monetization is in reality, but the early signs look better than Diablo Immortal (admittedly, not much of an achievement).
In Torchlight Infinite, killing monsters will drop some items, these loots have fate cards, gears, beacons and commodities.
